Sky lanterns, sometimes called Thai lanterns, wish lanterns or Kongming lanterns, are small hot air balloons first used at the turn of the third century by the Chinese military as a type of signalling balloon. They’re made of rice paper on a frame, with a small candle which produces hot air when lit and causes the lantern to float for as long as the flame stays alight. More recently, they have become a part of many Asian festivals, including the Thai Yi Peng celebrations. It’s said to be good luck to release them
